BENEFICIARY CHANGES
Should I keep accurate beneficiary information on file?
When you joined TRS, you completed a membership application, part of which listed your beneficary selections. It is important to keep accurate beneficiary information on file with TRS. Divorce, remarriage, a birth or death in your family could impact the beneficiary choices you have on file with our office.
You may review your beneficiary information online at any time by signing up for an active member account via the Account Management section of this site. Once a year, we also provide you with a paper copy of a statement of your account (Annual Member Statement), which is distributed through your employer, usually in October. You should carefully review your account often and report any beneficiary changes to TRS by completing a Change of Beneficiary form.
Should you die prior to retirement, TRS will use the beneficiary information on file with our office to determine disposition of benefits to your surviving beneficary(ies). Based on selections you have on file with TRS and your service credit, should you die prior to retirement, your beneficiary(ies) are entitled to either a refund of your contributions and interest or a montlhy payment for life.
