Employer Responsibilities

Working Together to Serve Georgia's Educators-
As an employer in the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia, we know that you want the best for your employees. TRS does too. In an effort to make membership through retirement as seamless as possible, for both you and your employees, it is important that you understand your responsibilities, as well as the rules and regulations as stated in the official code for retirement and pensions.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Enrolling eligible employees in TRS
    • Withholding the required 5.53% contribution from each member’s annual salary.
      Submitting the required employee (5.53%) and employer (10.28%). contributions to the board of trustees by the tenth calendar day of the month following the month for which the contributions were made.
      • Failure to remit the contributions by the deadline may subject you to a penalty of 1.5% of the amount of the remittance for each month and an additional 1.5% for each additional month or fraction of a month during which the failure continues.
    • Maintaining employee records.
    • Submitting updated member information and employment status changes to TRS.
    • Reporting changes to the employer’s address or contact information.
    • Responding to TRS requests for information in a timely manner to avoid delays.
    • Obtaining TRS forms required for employees.
      • Submitting required employee data in the designated format and within established due dates.
      • Designating a contact person, who has the authority to complete and submit forms, to respond to TRS requests and inquiries.
        Reporting mergers or consolidations.
      • Completing the Retirement Certification Report (TRS8) and Sick Leave Certification Form (SKL). You must submit these forms for all employees who apply for retirement.
