Mary Elizabeth Davis has been serving in public education in Georgia for nearly 20 years across four school districts in a variety of leadership roles. Currently, she is the Superintendent of Cherokee County Schools serving 42,000 students. Prior to joining Cherokee County, Mary Elizabeth served as the Superintendent for almost seven years in Henry County Schools. During her tenure as Superintendent, Mary Elizabeth has been known for elevating operational systems, achieving financial efficiencies, and growing improved student performance outcomes for students and schools.
Prior to joing the Henry County community, Mary Elizabeth was chief Academic Officer for the Cobb County School District and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction in Gwinnett County. She began her professional career as a chemistry teacher in Fairfax County, VA where she also coached girls' basketball and field hockey.
Mary Elizabeth was named on the inaugrural list of 100 most influential educational leaders in the U.S. by District Administrator in 2024 and was a previous finalist for Georgia's Superintendent of the Year.
A native of New Jersey, she earned a chemistry degree at Messiah College in Pennsylvania where she also played field hockey and softball. After moving to Georgia, Mary Elizabeth completed all her graduate work, including a PhD in Education Policy, at Georgia State University. She now resides in Canton, Georgia with her husband of 23 years and their two young children.
