Service retirees can work in the following full-time capacities while continuing to receive retirement benefits.
Private School Teaching
Teaching in a State Other than Georgia
Employment in the Private Sector (See Contractual Employment)
Self-Employment (See Contractual Employment)
Temporary Employment: Retirees may work in any temporary, full-time position for three calendar months in a fiscal year and continue receiving monthly benefit payments. The full-time position must be paid at the normal contracted compensation. The three months do not have to be consecutive.
Optional Retirement Plan (Board of Regents only): If a retiree retires from a position under Board of Regents, the retiree may be eligible to work full-time at a Board of Regents institution without jeopardizing any benefit payments. In order to do so, the position must be eligible for the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) and the retiree must elect ORP mandated by the Board of Regents within 60 days of employment.
ERS/PSERS (Technical College System of Georgia Only): If a retiree did not retire from a position under the Technical College System of Georgia, the retiree may be eligible to work full-time with a technical institution without jeopardizing any benefit payments. The retiree must elect ERS or PSERS within 30 days of employment.
Classroom Teacher (Board of Education): Retirees can work as a full-time classroom teacher with a local board of education employer in certain subject areas if the retiree retired with 30 years of service and has had a 12-month break.
